A Study Library in St. Andrews
year 2

Background
Outside the burgh wall surrounding St Andrews, the architectural language changes. Ornate Gothic cathedrals and classical motifs are replaced by more simple, pitched roof buildings and fishing infrastructure. The proposal is situated in a walled garden currently used as a boat store by the university sailing club. The gable ends of two pitched volumes face over the water towards the remains of St. Andrews cathedral whilst a derelict pumphouse is re-purposed as a house for a visiting academic. The lade beside the pumphouse provides power to the building via a micro hydro turbine connected to a ground source heat pump. Inside the main building is a range of different types of spaces to suit the needs of different users.
